Voxtral vs ElevenLabs: Mistral's open model against the market leader
Prices checked on 12 October 2026, excluding promotions, subject to change. ElevenLabs, Voxtral and Mistral are trademarks of their owners; Aievalu is not affiliated with any of them.
In March 2026, Mistral AI released Voxtral TTS, an open-weight speech synthesis model, and positioned it against ElevenLabs, the reference in the field. This page compares the two at engine level: what each can do, what it costs, what the vendors themselves say. It concerns you directly if you use Aievalu, whose voices are Voxtral's presets: comparing Voxtral with ElevenLabs is comparing our engine with theirs. The common unit remains the minute of voice-over, about 1,000 characters (method in our price comparison).

What Mistral claims, and how to read it
According to Mistral's announcement, Voxtral TTS has 4 billion parameters, speaks nine languages, clones a voice from 3 to 25 seconds of reference audio, and reaches a model latency of 70 milliseconds on a typical 500-character sample. On quality, Mistral reports "superior naturalness" compared with ElevenLabs Flash v2.5 at a similar time to first audio, and "parity" with ElevenLabs v3, based on a human evaluation by native speakers across nine languages; on voice customisation, the vendor reports 68.4% of preferences in its favour. These are vendor claims, from the vendor's own protocol, not an independent test. They indicate at least that the model plays in the same league; only listening on your own text will tell you what you think, for instance on Aievalu's voices page, where every sample reads the same passage.
Where ElevenLabs wins
The ecosystem. ElevenLabs is not a model, it is a platform: more than thirty languages against nine, a library of thousands of voices against a handful of presets, automatic dubbing, sound effects, conversational agents, integrations everywhere and an interface anyone picks up in five minutes. Cloning is available there from $6 a month without writing a line of code. For multilingual production or for a team without a developer that wants its own voice, ElevenLabs remains the obvious choice, and its price is the price of that breadth.
Where Voxtral wins
Openness and price. The weights can be downloaded under a CC BY-NC 4.0 licence: a lab, a school or an individual can run the model at home, study it, adapt it, provided the use is not commercial. For commercial use, Mistral's API charges $0.016 per thousand characters, about $0.016 per minute, ten times less than ElevenLabs Starter, with no subscription and no expiring credits. The model is European and hosted in Europe, which matters for some procurement rules. And cloning from three seconds is, via the API, a basic feature.
The flip side is that Voxtral used directly assumes a developer: no interface, no player, no invoice, no history. That is precisely the space Aievalu occupies: Voxtral's presets, in English and French, behind a simple screen, billed per character, with commercial use included from the first euro (see the answer on usage rights). We offer neither cloning nor the seven other languages; that is a choice of simplicity, not a limit of the engine.
A worked example
An agency produces 500 minutes of narration a month, about 500,000 characters. At ElevenLabs that is the Pro plan at $99 a month. Via the Voxtral API, the same volume costs about $8 a month, plus the time to develop and host a small internal tool. Via Aievalu, the Pro subscription at €49.99 gives 800,000 characters a month with nothing to build. Three answers to three situations: a complete platform, a building block for developers, a turnkey service in between.
Who should pick which
Pick ElevenLabs if you need many languages, dubbing, a very wide library or cloning without any technical work. Pick the Voxtral API if you have a developer, volume and the wish to own your pipeline. Pick Aievalu if you want Voxtral's quality in English or French, without code, at the most readable price. Questions we get asked
Can I use the open weights for my monetised videos? No: the CC BY-NC 4.0 licence excludes commercial use; you need Mistral's API or a service such as Aievalu. Are Aievalu's voices exactly Voxtral's? Yes, they are the model's presets, unmodified; we offer four, with three tones each. Why does Aievalu cost more than the API? Because you pay for an interface, a player, a history, an invoice and no code; the pricing detail shows the gap stays far below the market's subscriptions. How are characters counted? Spaces included, charged only when the audio is produced, see the FAQ; the free tiers of the various tools are compared on the free AI voice page, and how a model like Voxtral works is explained in our AI voice generator guide.
