The best AI voice generators in 2026: 10 tools compared
Prices checked on 12 October 2026, excluding promotions, subject to change. Amounts in dollars or euros as published by each vendor.
Ten tools cover most of the synthetic-voice market: four consumer apps, four cloud APIs, one open-weight model and one French service built on it. This comparison runs them through the same criteria: entry price, approximate cost per minute of audio (assuming about 1,000 characters per minute, see how characters are counted), French and English voices, voice cloning, commercial rights, and whether there is an app or only an API. If you want the basics first, start with our guide to the AI voice generator.
1. ElevenLabs: the quality benchmark, at a premium
ElevenLabs is the name most people quote for realism and cloning. The free tier gives about 10,000 credits a month with no commercial use. Starter (about $6 a month, 30,000 credits or roughly 30 minutes) unlocks commercial use and instant cloning; Creator (about $22, 121 minutes) adds professional cloning; Pro (about $99, 600 minutes) is for volume. Per minute, expect $0.17 to $0.20. App and API, dozens of languages including French. Strength: the range of voices and emotions. Weakness: one of the highest per-minute prices around.
2. Murf AI: the studio for business voice-overs
Murf ships a full editor (sync with video, music, pauses) and more than twenty languages. Free: ten minutes, no download. Creator: about $29 a month, or $19 on an annual plan, for 24 hours of generation a year, roughly two hours a month. Business: about $99 ($66 annual) for 96 hours a year. Cloning sits on the upper plans. Between $0.16 and $0.24 a minute depending on the plan: a good fit if you edit your videos inside the tool.
3. Play.ht: per-word billing, premium voices
Play.ht bills by the word, not the character. The free tier is limited; monthly plans start around $39. On annual billing, Personal works out at about $19 a month for 240,000 words with standard voices, and Professional at about $39 for 600,000 words with premium voices and commercial rights. App and API, French available, cloning offered. Converting words to minutes depends on your language, so we do not quote a per-minute figure.
4. Speechify Studio: voice-over and dubbing in one suite
Speechify is best known for its reading app (Premium at about $139 a year). Speechify Studio, the production tool, has a free tier, then Starter at about $19 per user per month and Creator at about $49. Many languages, cloning included. The vendor does not publish a character quota that can be compared directly, so there is no reliable per-minute cost.
5. OpenAI TTS: the simplest API for developers
No app: you write code. The tts-1 model costs about $15 per million characters, tts-1-hd about $30, and gpt-4o-mini-tts is billed per token, roughly $0.015 a minute. Good multilingual voices, including French, no cloning. Between $0.015 and $0.03 a minute: hard to beat if you can call an API, out of reach if you cannot.
6. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech: the widest price range
Four voice tiers: Standard and WaveNet at about $4 per million characters, Neural2 at $16, Chirp 3 HD at $30. A monthly free quota covers the first million standard characters. French available, cloning for enterprises on request. From $0.004 to $0.03 a minute, again through code, a cloud console and usage billing.
7. Amazon Polly: the AWS veteran
Polly offers four engines: Standard ($4 per million characters), Neural ($16), Generative ($30) and Long-form ($100). A free tier runs for twelve months. No cloning, French available. As with Google, the headline price is very low and the real cost is setup time and an AWS account.
8. Microsoft Azure Speech: HD quality, lower price
Azure charges about $16 per million characters for neural voices and about $22 for Neural HD, a rate cut in 2026. A free quota of 500,000 neural characters a month applies. French available, custom voices on request. About $0.016 to $0.022 a minute, for developers.
9. Mistral Voxtral TTS: the French open-weight model
Launched on 26 March 2026, Voxtral TTS is available as open weights on Hugging Face under CC BY-NC 4.0, so no commercial use when self-hosted, and through the Mistral API at about $0.016 per thousand characters with commercial use included. Nine languages, cloning from three seconds of audio through the API. About $0.016 a minute, provided you code the integration or own a GPU.
10. Aievalu: Voxtral voices, no code and no subscription
Aievalu is built on Voxtral preset voices and aims for simplicity: paste a text, listen, download an MP3 or WAV. The 100,000-character pack costs €9 and stays valid for twelve months, about €0.09 a minute; subscriptions range from €4.99 (60,000 characters a month) to €49.99 (800,000 characters, about €0.062 a minute). Prices are in euros, with no VAT charged. The limits are explicit: two languages only (French with Marie in three tones, English with Paul, Oliver and Jane), no cloning, 1,500 characters per generation. Commercial use is included with paid credits (see usage rights) and a two-sentence free trial needs no account.

Which tool for which need
YouTube creators: ElevenLabs if the budget allows and you want a wide emotional range; Aievalu if you publish in English or French and €9 for about a hundred minutes is enough, see our YouTube voice-over guide. Podcasts: Murf to build intro and music in one tool, Aievalu for narrated segments on a budget. Developers: OpenAI for simplicity, Google or Azure for voice choice, Mistral for French quality at low cost. Small budgets: cloud APIs are cheapest per character; Aievalu is the cheapest among no-code tools. Voice cloning: ElevenLabs, Play.ht or Speechify; Aievalu does not offer it. Method
Prices come from the vendors' public pricing pages, checked on 12 October 2026, excluding launch promotions and annual discounts unless stated. Cost per minute is an estimate based on 1,000 characters per minute; your text, voice and pace may differ. Every tool does something the others do not: this comparison names no winner, it helps you choose for your use. Full Aievalu pricing is on its own page.
