Free AI voice: what is actually free in 2026, and what is not

Prices and quotas checked on 12 October 2026, excluding promotions, subject to change.

“Free AI voice generator”, “free text to speech”, “free voice-over”: the searches are common, the honest answers less so. Almost every tool has a free tier; almost none lets you publish a monetised video. This page explains what “free” means at each vendor, then when it is enough. For how the tools work in the first place, see our guide to the AI voice generator.

What “free” means in practice

A free tier nearly always stacks several restrictions. A quota: a few minutes or a few thousand characters a month, often gone in one session. Limited rights: personal use only, no monetisation, sometimes mandatory attribution or an audio watermark. No download: you listen in the browser and keep nothing. An account: an email address, sometimes a card for cloud APIs. And restricted voices: the best voices and cloning stay behind the paywall. The real question is not “free or not” but “what am I allowed to do with the file”.

The free tiers of the apps

ElevenLabs gives about 10,000 credits a month, roughly ten minutes, with no commercial use: ideal to judge quality, useless for a channel. Murf AI offers ten minutes of generation with no download. Play.ht and Speechify Studio have free levels capped on characters and voices, with premium voices and cloning reserved for subscribers. In all four cases the free tier is a demo, not a production tool.

The free quotas of the cloud APIs

The cloud giants are more generous, if you can code. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech gives the first million standard characters every month, about sixteen hours of decent audio, plus a smaller quota on neural voices. Microsoft Azure gives 500,000 neural characters a month, about eight hours. Amazon Polly has a free tier for twelve months, then charges. OpenAI has no free tier for speech. These quotas allow commercial use, but they require a cloud account with a card, an API key and a script: if you are not a developer, the learning time costs more than a €9 pack.

The case of open-weight models

Mistral Voxtral TTS, released on 26 March 2026, is available as open weights on Hugging Face. Free to download, but under CC BY-NC 4.0: commercial use is not allowed when self-hosted, and you need a GPU and technical skills to run it. The same voices, through the Mistral API, cost about $0.016 per thousand characters with commercial use. Older open models exist, usually with less natural English and French voices.

The Aievalu free trial

Aievalu takes the opposite approach: a deliberately short trial with no friction. Paste up to 160 characters, two sentences, pick a voice among Paul, Oliver, Jane and Marie, listen. One play a day, no account, no card, personal use. You do not download the file: the trial exists to check how a name, a date or an acronym is pronounced before you pay. We give no free characters at signup, which keeps throwaway accounts out and prices low for everyone.

When free is enough

To hear a voice before choosing, for personal use (proofreading by ear, learning a language, listening to an article as described on our text to speech page), or for a prototype nobody will see, free is enough. Just check the rights: a video published with a “non-commercial” voice can be taken down, and platforms now ask you to flag synthetic voices.

When €9 is cheaper than free

As soon as you publish, three hidden costs appear: the time spent working around quotas, the legal risk of unauthorised use, and the loss of consistency when you switch tools between two videos. A 100,000-character pack for €9, valid for twelve months, covers about a hundred minutes of audio with commercial use included, as MP3 or WAV, with no subscription. Count real time: an hour spent wiring a cloud API already costs more than the pack. Full details are on the pricing page, and our comparison of the best AI voice generators puts the prices side by side, tool by tool.
